The first frontier lab files

Anthropic has confidentially filed to go public — the first frontier AI lab to start the process — and the number that stands out isn't the price but the headcount behind it.

On June 1, 2026, Anthropic confirmed it had quietly handed the SEC a draft Form S-1, the paperwork that begins a public listing. No frontier AI lab had ever filed; the category had lived entirely on private and secondary markets. The draft is confidential, so no audited financials are public, and no share count, price, or date is set.

When Google crossed $30 billion in revenue it had about 32,000 employees; Anthropic reached similar scale with roughly 5,000.

The striking figure is the staff list. Anthropic is running at roughly $47 billion in annualized revenue against about 5,000 employees — close to $9.4 million of revenue per person, by outside estimates several times Apple's or Google's, each of which carries more than 165,000 people. The reason is structural: when the product is intelligence sold through an API, the next million dollars of revenue costs compute, not another hire. When Google passed $30 billion in revenue it had around 32,000 employees; Anthropic crossed similar ground at a fraction of that, five years in.

The filing landed days after a $65 billion round closed at a $965 billion private valuation — so the company began its march to public markets almost the week its last private price was struck. OpenAI is reported to have filed confidentially a week earlier; SpaceX is moving the same way. For the first time, a frontier lab is on a path that ends with the public, and index funds, able to own a piece of it.
