A billion, with an asterisk

An independent measurement firm estimates the ChatGPT app crossed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026 — the fastest any app has ever gotten there, and still adding them 62% faster year-on-year.

The app store trackers at Sensor Tower put a number on it in early June: about 1 billion people opened the ChatGPT app in May 2026, roughly three years after its launch. No app had reached that monthly-user mark so fast — Google Maps, Chrome, YouTube, Messenger and TikTok each took somewhere between five and eight years. ChatGPT was still growing 62% year-over-year even at billion-user scale, the point where most products plateau.

A billion people trying ChatGPT is a triumph of adoption. A billion people paying for it would be the milestone that actually matters.

The figure is an estimate, not a confession. OpenAI itself talks in weekly users — about 900 million across web and app as of February — and counts its API traffic separately. The round billion is Sensor Tower's read of monthly app installs alone, a different yardstick that happens to land near the same place, which is part of why the milestone landed so cleanly.

Buried in the same report is the number that cuts against the headline. US users who installed Anthropic's Claude in early 2026 spent 5% less time in ChatGPT a month later — the first quantified sign of leakage at the exact moment ChatGPT peaked. Claude is an eighteenth of ChatGPT's size, but it grew 640% over the year against ChatGPT's 62%. Reaching everyone first is not the same as keeping them.
