Buried in the press release for Anthropic's $30 billion February funding round was a single line that, in isolation, would be its own headline: Claude Code — a tool you run by typing into a terminal — is now a business pulling more than $2.5 billion a year in run-rate revenue. Until this disclosure, its scale could only be guessed at from proxies, like the estimate that it touches roughly 4% of all public commits on GitHub. Now it has a number, and the number is larger than the total revenue of most publicly traded software companies.

Nine months from public launch to a sixth of Anthropic's revenue — and enterprise, once a rounding error, now buys more than half of it.

The arc is steep. Claude Code launched publicly in May 2025; it reportedly reached $1 billion in annualized run-rate by November and crossed $2.5 billion by February — a sixth of Anthropic's entire revenue, from one product. The genuinely new detail isn't the size, though, it's the composition: business subscriptions quadrupled since January, and enterprise now accounts for over half of all Claude Code revenue. A tool that began as a developer favorite has become a procurement line item. The buying decision has moved from the individual engineer to the company.

That shift is the signal worth holding onto. Coding at the terminal has historically been the part of software that shipped free, and a category — GitHub Copilot, OpenAI's Codex, Cursor — that was sold one developer at a time. Anthropic is reporting that the spend has consolidated and moved up the org chart, which is what a market looks like when it stops being a hobby and becomes a budget.
