Insuring the autopilot

Lemonade is the first outside insurer to underwrite Tesla's self-driving miles directly, halving the per-mile rate for every mile the car drives itself.

Lemonade's new "Autonomous Car" policy reads a live feed from Tesla's API and bills the car second by second: miles you drive cost the normal rate, miles Full Self-Driving drives cost half. It is the first time a third-party insurer has priced autonomy by the mile rather than by the driver, and the first to put its own money behind the claim that letting the software steer is the safer bet.

The product still carries a warning: "these things are not fully autonomous yet and they require a certain intervention level."

Tesla has long advertised that FSD is far safer than a human — its February report logs one serious crash every 5.3 million miles against a US average near 660,000, which Musk rounds up to "9 to 10 times safer." Independent analysts have picked that figure apart: FSD runs mostly on highways, Teslas are newer than the average car on the road, and their owners skew toward lower-risk drivers. Corrected for all that, Carnegie Mellon's Phil Koopman estimates the real edge is closer to twice as safe, and calls even that unproven.

The quiet tell is that Lemonade — the party with actual money on the line — did not price on nine times. Its actuaries set the 50% discount off their own estimate that FSD is "about 2x safer than average human driving," landing on roughly the same number as Tesla's harshest critic. When an insurer and a skeptic independently arrive at the figure the marketing department doubled, the cheaper miles tell you which number the market believes.
